These articles were just garbage.  Gawker is a well-known website that refuses to report news without a huge bias. While this is normally fine they are not the best to report on topics like games.  They even start their article about gamer gate saying we don’t write about this and we don’t care.  We only care because Intel pulled ads.  This shows that they read a few articles and wrote this thinking it made them authorities.

The author for this article does the same thing that CNN did when reporting about the Fappening.  They declared the website 4chan full of hackers and didn’t look at the website.  This is becoming more and more of an issue in sloppy writing and reporting, if you’re going to write an article that will be widely published you should face check before you publish.

The laziness that we see in many journalists today is a result of the 24 hour news cycle.  When people constantly have to be talking about something it makes them not have time to properly research before they have to publish their “findings”.

As someone who plays games it is frustrating to see everyone lumped together.  A few people got really mad at a lady for no reason and then suddenly everyone is assuming that gaming is bad for people.  I think that this causes more issues by giving publicity to a select group of idiots.

With people listening to these small groups it makes it harder for the rest of the gaming culture to continue to expand.  Video games are a 71 billion dollar a year industry, that is a lot more then then music industry.  Gaming is also rapidly closing the gap on the movie industry as it becomes more profitable.   Games are here to stay and people need to accept that and be ready for the new people.  Fighting against these changes is just a waste of time.

Game Design

For my game I would like to help teach people about the distance that their food travels for them to buy it in a grocery store.  The movement to buy local has been growing but for many that is a luxury that they choose to ignore.  Learning more about how far an apple might travel before you eat would be amazing for many people.  Using a smart phone application would be my preferred way of getting this game on the market.

The game design would be similar to a trivia game.  It would help you build a grocery list as you went.  If you wanted an item it would make you guess where the largest producers in the world were for that product.  Once you answered it would tell you the correct response then also add that item to your list.  This would make it easy for people to learn while being productive.

This game would not have a specific timeline as I believe that this game could help many people learn from their daily shopping excursions.   I think that as people saw just how far many of their foods traveled to be there they would be shocked.   This game might be a little different from those we discussed in class but I think that it could be just as informative as some of the games that we have read about.

Game of Chance

Learning about this style of game was fascinating because to me this is a completely foreign idea for learning.  I understand that many place are looking for new ways to interact with their visitors and this seems like a great new idea for them.  If the games that they play at these museums are good enough they might even be able to draw in other people to visit who might otherwise have skipped visiting.

I think that as this market grows the games that are played will become better and better.  Right now they have a very in group focus with only the people who play already paying attention to the clues dropped about future games.  Instead of having a complicated hunt be focused around an online world it would be better to have the clues hidden in the museum so visitors got a chance to explore and see some new exhibits they might have never seen otherwise.

For the Smithsonian the game they developed had several very good parts that helped to increase awareness.  If they had found a way to tie it in with the popular movie Night at the Museum it might have been an even bigger game.  I think this was a great first effort that will pay off for them in the  future as they continue to think creatively about out of the box ways to draw people in to visiting.

World With out oil

Looking at the game World without Oil it really makes you wonder if this was an effective technique for teaching about shortages. For many people thinking about how the choices you make are affected by whether or not there is currently oil is an uncommon thought.  It has become more common over the past several years as everyone see the rising gas prices and thinks about if there is a better way.  But we have yet to deal with full shortages which could set our economy grinding to a halt as many important industries are unable to continue.

Raising awareness for such events is always hard so any new way that might reach people and make them a little more conscious is useful.  Using this game as an example you can see that for many people who played it was a very changing experience from their testimony’s after describing the changes they see in their own lives.   For many of those who did play the habits they developed while playing carried over into the rest of their lives making them much more conscious.

While raising conscious through fun new ways is a great idea, it makes many wonder about the results that could have been achieved through using that same money for a more traditional ad campaign that might reach 10 times more people and help present more of the facts.  Using ad campaigns to help change public opinion on a topic has been a constant technique for many years now. With more and more people arguing for your viewing space and the ads you get in might be harder to get the same impact that the game had on people’s lives.

In 2003 the presidential race started to get updated not by one of the big two candidates but by a smaller man.  Howard Dean tried to get people more involved in the process with a grassroots effort centered on video games.  Using games to appeal to a younger generation has long been an idea that many companies have used, but it was a first because of its use in a political race.  Following a couple elections with unusually high younger vote turn out it becomes more and more apparent to many candidates that this is a valuable demographic they should try and court more frequently.

I think that video games are a great form of art.  And I have been told that a goal of art is to make people feel or act.    And in that way the Howard Dean video game was very effective.  It made people who played it think about the political choices they were making and the actions they took.   Using this model in the future many people could try to change video games to help educate people on a variety of topics.  The only issue that I see with this is that many people would see that as to myspacey, which is so uncool that it would be hard to get people to play little mini games.

Another major issue I could see with this game is that if people felt like it was manipulating them too strongly they would stop playing.  People want to feel as if they choices they make are not affected by outside influences.  So that is an extra issue when designing this software.  It has to be cool enough for people to want to play it and that means less ads.  But it has to have enough ads in it to make it worth the development time.  This catch 22 means that the balance between these two topics will be hard to achieve.

In the 2016 election I believe that we will see more use of games to try and promote the vote.  Getting people out to vote is hard enough and many politicians see any way they can get more people voting as a valuable thing.  With Facebook constantly changing its rules and privacy it makes it easy for groups to find a way to get their message out in a way that might not be as standard yet.  Being the cool new thing can help to sway how many people look at and deal with a person.

For many of the smaller candidates getting in field results for how they are doing or polling can put a strain on their already limited budget. Using things like games to try and gauge interest in a candidate might be one way to help people run a campaign for cheaper.  This process would require a little more refining to make it very effective at gauging interest but it would be a good place to start.  The hardest part would be getting the developers.  Because so many campaigns run on volunteers it would be hard for many of them to spend the money needed to design a good game that can fit their needs.

Since the release of the Atari gaming system developers have seen a steady rise in the way people want to spend their free time.  With more people looking to be engaged by playing games instead of slowly walking around a museum staring at a painting.  This has affected many people I know who dislike going to art museums because they hold less appeal every day.  I don’t know anyone who would spend money on art before on an entertainment system when decorating their new homes or apartments.

I agree with many of the theorems discussed in this paper.  In one of the later paragraphs the author talks about how even though with electronic literature many of the traditional forms of writing are disappearing some of the older ones still exist.  Poetry is the example that is used in this paper.  While it may never be the same as it once was, there is a resurgence of poetry as people find new ways to incorporate it into their writings.

Using electronics to help the spread of literature will be very valuable in the upcoming decades.  With the spread of Amazon Kindle and free ebook services, like the online Project Guttenberg, the amount of people reading online will only increase.  Using free services like these it has never been easier to be a published author.  Being able to put your book for sale by your self means that the old gate keeps who might have kept your book from being published are no longer an issue.

Going for one full week without technology is a difficult task that gets harder with every passing year.  The connection that people share with their smartphones and laptops can hurt the other relationships that people work to maintain.  Many of those who attempted this realized that not only would they fail every class during that week but most would lose their jobs as a result of their inability to work.

One major theme that was mentioned by most people at least once throughout the week was the spare time they had to pursue other hobbies.  This extra time could come from a couple different reasons.  Many of them had extra time because they weren’t spending a long time everyday wasting time they could be learning by playing around online.  The other common one mentioned by lots of people was with the extra time they had from not studying or working they could do something more fun.

Finding time to call your grandma can be difficult but with not tech to distract you it gets a little easier to find the time.

One of the best examples from the week of people making new uses to their time is shown below.

This person had a great new use of their time this week once they turned off their tech.  For many people reading paper books has fallen out of fashion with the rise of kindles and eBooks.  Quite a lot of people do not enjoy reading and yet they still buy books. Having the ability to carry a full library wit you anytime is too valuable to give up.

In this post Courtnie talks about the without tech she is forced to have deeper conversations.  For many people the use of technology can inhibit their ability to continue talking with others.  This was the best example of this but many others had similar remarks about their talks with friends during the week.

Another theme that was commonly discussed was how the older technology was hard to figure out. Many of these tweets might have been a joke but inside every joke there is a grain of truth.  This was commonly used with the photos that were posted. With no inventions like the burritobox it became harder to pick what was tech for some people. With a wide range of photos that ranged from potatoes with computer parts stuck in them to photos of half cooked food.

The photo of a potato computer is a common joke among the online gaming community. When many people get into gaming they have cheap computers that have a hard time dealing with the graphics.  The direct photo comparison reminded me of what it actually felt like to have a computer and be unable to use it.  I found that at some points in the week I was using my laptop as a placemat to eat upon which was a big change of pace.

Over the course of the week many variations on eating less were posted.  Some people posted photos of a blank table while others posted half cooked food.  This was an amusing difference because it showed how dependent on technology we are for every part of our life. With our kitchens getting more complicated it is only a matter of time before we have robots in there making food for us.  This dependency on tech can make life more difficult.

I found that I had a lot more open time in my day during this week.  With all this extra spare time I used it to hike Chester bowl and read.  I have lived in Duluth for four years and have yet to get a library card.  But in the week when I was forced to not use the internet I got out and got myself a card and some books to read.  There were quite a few people who posted about their adventures hiking.

Many others found that with their free time they were able to enjoy new hobbies as well.  We saw a wide range of people enjoying hiking either on the beaches of California or the snow covered hills of Duluth. With each photo that was posted more people were exposed to no tech. Dragging friends along to these activities made them a fun event for multiple people that  One of the best examples of this was the photo posted of a girl trying to do yoga with her dad.

One of my favorite posts I saw all week just made me miss summer. It was a photo of friends roasting s’mores around a fire with no tech needed. These simpler times are a reason that many people love summer.  They get to enjoy being outside with no pressure for anything else to be done or to happen.  And if you’re just hanging out with friends there is no pressure to be on your phone communicating with people far away.

There were many themes that became clear when reading over the events of that 1 week with no tech.  This hashtag while never one of the top trending hashtags did accumulate a large amount of tweets to it in a very short time which is a very unusual.  But there was so much more than just a trendy hashtag it became a way for people to disconnect even if it was just an hour a day.  They were forced out of their comfort zone and many of them exceled.  The wide range of hobbies shown and ways of dealing with the technology that just doesn’t work anymore was a fascinating way to see how people thought about the technology they used.

1)  I would have more free time.  By not having tech I wouldn’t go to school or work so I would have lots of time to do all the things I don’t normally have time for.   This would be great for both my social life and my health.  I could cook good food and visit friends far away.

2)  i would lose my job.   Because much of my work revolves around tech I would be unemployed by the end of the week.  I couldn’t respond to emails or phone calls. This would impact clients making them angry.  I also couldn’t access any of my data which would be problematic.  I need the tech to make the maps that clients.

3)   You feel dependent on it   I know many people who feel super lost if they don’t have access to the internet or a computer.

4)  You never feel alone.  Any time you are out you can always be talking to other people now.With everyone connected you can maintain entire relationships with out ever seeing each other in person.

5)  Ignoring other people in favor of texting on their phones.  This hurts the way you know the people around you since it looks like there are other people you would rather talk to.
